About Bellringing

English Bellringing, also known as ‘Change Ringing’, is the way in which bells are controlled to ring in specific sequences to produce tunes which are called methods.

There are about 40,000 bellringers in the UK! With that many ringers, it’s a great hobby socially too. No matter where you go in the UK, you’re never far from a tower with bells and a band of ringers who will welcome you!

All sorts of people are ringers. Many people seem to think that you have to be musical or perhaps mathematically-minded to ring, which isn’t true at all. Having a sense of rhythm is helpful but is also developed over time. We certainly don’t conform to any stereotype and welcome everyone regardless.

Some people think that you need to be quite strong to ring the bells, and this isn’t true either. Whilst the bells themselves can weigh as much as a small car, the construction of the wheel the bell sits on, and the system of ropes and pulleys, means it feels much lighter.

Another common myth is that you need to go to church or be religious to be a bellringer. Whilst the bells we ring are often situated in religious buildings and we have to be respectful of that, a large proportion of ringers are not religious and ring for many other reasons!
